I'm Dr. V and I help people have fearless births by teaching them about the mind-body connection.
I created Mind-Body, Birth® because I was heartbroken, and I was angry. That is a powerful combination.
I learned the science that showed me we’ve all been lied to. We don’t have to just accept that childbirth is awful. It can be better. It’s supposed to be better.
I discovered that people were out there giving birth without all the information, and they were blaming themselves—for years, for lifetimes—for things there were not their fault. But no one told them what was really going on.
I witnessed so much judgment and divide and shoulding that birth became somehow both tribalist and completely isolating.
Everyone I talked to was so, so sad, so alone, so full of guilt and so full of fear, all while pretending they were in the happiest moment of their life.
And I said, “No.” We aren’t doing this anymore. There will be a better way. A way to Birth. Better.
So I created Mind-Body, Birth. A holistic approach that truly shows you how fearless birth is possible while supporting you to ensure it is achievable. And we will do it all in a way that is honest, fun, and funny.
An early review on Mind-Body, Birth said it was like sitting down for tea and cookies with a friend (read the review here). And that means a lot to me. Because whether you read the book, take the course, work one-on-one with me, or just follow my stuff on SM, we are in this together.
This is the Mind-Body, Birth way. Getting you the information you need to make the best possible decision for you in this moment, without judgment, and supporting you if that decision changes. Because you are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to make decisions other people don’t agree with. You’re allowed to make decisions you wouldn’t have made at another point in your life. You are allowed to feel however you feel about birth. It’s all real, and true and valid. And it is all okay.
At the end of Mind-Body, Birth:
1) You will feel confident in yourself and your body. If you don’t believe that joyful, wonderful birth is possible for you, you will.
2) You will have honest information. I will not hide any of it. Not even the scary stuff. Because you are strong. You are smart. And you can handle all of it. Even if sometimes it feels like you can’t. Those moments are okay too.
3) You will be ready. With your completed birth toolkit, you will be fully prepared. This isn’t some “here you go, push push push, you’re a parent” class. This is deep, holistic preparation where you become your own guide. Because you are the only person who knows what it feels like to be in your body. You know what you need. And you absolutely can take charge fearlessly.
If you are ready to go from “birth will be the worst pain I can possibly experience, and I have to just let it happen to me,” to “I can have a joyful, amazing, powerful birth experience that I feel good about,” then you have come to the right place.

Starting Where You Are
Sound Birthing meets you where you are, unique to your needs, and adapts to your learning style.
Pregnancy and birth are life-altering experiences, even if you’ve done them before. When you carry a baby, you are carrying a whole lot more than a baby. You’re carrying your hopes, fears, experiences, expectations, relationships, and history. I wanted Sound Birthing to be a place of ease—a soft landing in birth prep. And I mean it when I say there are no “shoulds” here. Take what works for you and leave the rest.
That means Sound Birthing programs can be done on their own or in combination. They can be done in any order. You get to choose the path that fits you.
I also wanted Sound Birthing to be authentic. There is no other program like it because it is me. And just like you, “I’m the only one of me.” (Thank you, Taylor Swift.)
My programs are science-y and nerdy, but they’re also fun and funny. If you take a video course, you’re going to hear me laugh. A lot.
One of the most important things you’ll learn with Sound Birthing is that birth doesn’t have to be awful. It doesn’t have to be the thing you get through to get to the good part. It can be the good part. And you know what? So can birth prep.
Do we talk about serious and sometimes scary things? Absolutely. Do we also have a joy-filled experience? Yes!
What makes Sound Birthing special? Well… me.
The Birth Toolkit
Every lesson, activity and journal prompt is used to help you build your unique birth toolkit. You aren’t relying on a one-size fits all method. You are learning flexible tools that adapt to you—not scripts to follow. Plus it's fun. There are opportunities for stickers...
I'm a Sexual Health Educator
Do I talk about sex, pleasure and intimacy? Yes! Birth is inherently sexual. We have heavily medicalized it and removed sexuality from it because sexuality is stigmatized. We have stripped birth down so that the only acceptable feeling is pain. When we embrace sexuality, that sexual health is part of overall health, and that pleasure isn't bad, dirty or immoral, we can make space for a better birth experience. We can make space for a better lived experience.
Do we have to talk about sex? Of course not! You don’t have to do anything. This is just a piece that is there for you, should you want it or if you find yourself curious. Can we talk about pleasure and intimacy during pregnancy, birth and beyond? 100%. Can we acknowledge that sexual stigma can impact birth experience and call that good enough. Absolutely.
But I am here for ALL OF YOU. The slimy, sticky, sexy, painful, loud, free, scared, glorious, grumpy, joyful, beautiful being that you are.
If it’s on your mind, it can be on our agenda. I am here to support you. Even with the stuff that feelings scary, icky, embarrassing, or hard.
A Research-Backed Approach
At my core, I am a science nerd. I love the mind-body connection so much I got a PhD in it. I took everything I learned through years of research, education, and experience and used it to create the approaches behind Sound Birthing.
The reality is, many birth classes are old. The plus side of being around a long time, is people are familiar with you. They know your name. The downside, they were created before we knew what we now know about the nervous system and birth.
Sound Birthing courses, books, and one-on-one support teach you about fearless birth and hacking your biological to have a better birth with better outcomes. All based on science and current research, explained in a way that is easy to understand. No science background required. Gain real understanding, accurate information, and the skills you need to Birth. Better.
Real Tools for Real Intensity
Birth is unpredictable. The best preparation isn’t a perfect plan—it’s a flexible toolkit you can actually use when it matters most.
Sound Birthing programs teach you how to work with your body, regulate your nervous system in real time, and make informed decisions in the moments that matter.
Whether you’re navigating a long early labor, unexpected interventions, or transition—you’ll have tools that actually work.

Dr. Sam Vaive, founder of Sound Birthing and the creator of Mind-Body, Birth®, is a psychologist specializing in the biopsychosocial aspects of childbirth.
Their work sits at the intersection of psychology, social work, sexual health education, Yoga, and sound therapy—bridging research and real-world experience to support how people actually move through birth.
Sound Birthing was built on the understanding that preparation is not about control. It’s about clarity. Not about performing birth “correctly,” but about having the tools to navigate whatever unfolds.
At the core of this work is a simple belief: you are a whole person, not just a vessel for birth—and your preparation should reflect that.
